over at Vox Matthew Yglesias makes a case that Facebook itself is the problem, not just the Cambridge Analytica side of it

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/21/17144748/case-against-facebook

If you step back and think of Facebook as being useful for basically two things, advertising/propaganda on the one hand, and establishing and maintaining an online network of contacts who may or may not be personally connected to you in the "offline" world, the thing has some uses.

But it would seem that Facebook is a platform that is run by people who are not able to admit that they're whole business model depends on relentless data mining to keep it running on the one hand, and on the other hand that the very nature of social media is to allow for the creation and distribution of what Jacques Ellul called sociological propaganda and horizontal propaganda.

Facebook and Twitter are propaganda tools.  It's hardly a surprise if people on the left or in progressive movements find them useful but the kicker is that these are social media platforms that are not looking to be all that regulated.  Cambridge Analytica is not shaping up to be a bug or even a feature, it could be an opportunity for people to observe that mercenary data mining is the whole point of the social media enterprise in a platform like Facebook.

If you understand that it's a propaganda platform then you can use it knowing what it's there for.  If you don't know that it's a propaganda platform then you'll probably feel bad that the curated lives mediated by social media of people who may or may not know look better than yours.  They aren't better than yours.

Since Facebook is in the news for fairly obvious reasons I'll try to get to some of that with a links for the weekend post but this particular "case against Facebook" might misconstrue the business model.  The business model is the data mining side of things.  The "fake news" part isn't necessarily the only thing that can be done with the results of data mining. I'd write more a long the lines of what I wrote in "Mars Hill and the idol of social media" but I don't feel like doing that now.

some brief thoughts on the recent Uber collision death, i can't shake a misgiving that self-driving cars are basically just fire-and-forget weapons in an era where too many humans kill humans with cars as it is

Living in Seattle where tech is one of the gods of the region, I was once asked if I would ever consider using a self-driving car.

Nope.

Why not?

There's two parts to this.  The first is that to get from point A to point B you have to trust someone to get there, either because you can drive yourself and trust the craft of the vehicle you use, or because you trust whoever is driving you and the vehicle they use.

The second part ...  and this is the part I'm going to focus on a bit more, I am generally of the impression that the kind of technology that was developed in the last fifty years to create self-driving vehicles that, once set in motion to reach their destinations, go the distance has had one reliable application.

Fire and forget weapons.

I have no problem with an AIM-120 being a fire and forget air-to-air missile.  I expect that a self-directing vehicle literally hits its target destination because that's what it's built to do.

The idea of adapting such technology to civilian transit scares me not because I think it's horrifying that military technology should somehow stain the civilian sphere.  We have all sorts of glorious innovations in medical practice, surgery and so on thanks to military field innovations.

No, the problem is that I already fear the human drivers who are no less likely to kill someone on accident than a driverless car.  But you can sue the human driver of a car for something.

So when I read about the recent death caused by a self-driving car my initial feeling was a depressed sense of the inevitability of this.  Of course someone was going to get killed it was only a matter of how and under exactly what circumstances.

On Sunday night, one of Uber’s self-driving cars struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona.

Elaine Herzberg, a 49-year-old woman, was walking her bicycle across a road when a Volvo SUV, outfitted with Uber’s radar technology and in fully autonomous mode, collided with her. The car was traveling at 38 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone, and it did not attempt to brake before striking her, according to Tempe police.

It is the first time that a self-driving car, operating in fully autonomous mode, has killed a pedestrian. Sylvia Moir, the police chief of Tempe, announced on Tuesday that Uber was likely not at fault for the collision. But after her department released footage of the collision on Wednesday, transportation experts said it showed a “catastrophic failure” of Uber’s technology.

The two stories did not perform equally in the press. By the middle of the week, the Uber news had drifted off the front pages of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN. It often sat near the middle or bottom of the page on Techmeme, a website that aggregates technology news from dozens of outlets. The Cambridge Analytica story, meanwhile, consistently clanged around above the fold of every outlet. I found myself asking: Why?

Perhaps it’s because people still mostly believe the hype around self-driving cars. This isn’t surprising: I still mostly believe the hype. Statistically speaking, cars of all types are super-ubiquitous, high-speed murder machines. Automobiles kill about 102 Americans every day, according to government data. “Accidents,” a category which includes car crashes, are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the CDC.

Nor are nondrivers exempt from the carnage. Nearly 6,000 pedestrians were killed by a car in the United States in 2016. Hundreds of cyclists die every year as well.

So maybe the relative lack of coverage of the Uber crash represents a healthy perspective. It suggests, perhaps, that journalists and the public understand the difference between anecdote and data. Sixteen Americans die every day while walking near a street. Most of us never learn their names. What makes Elaine Herzberg different?

Almost any given day I commute to and from work in the Puget Sound area I think of how I could very possibly die today because of how people are.  You or I are far, far more likely to die at the hands of an inattentive driver than at the hands of someone wielding a gun.  I'm more worried that of those wielding guns cops will be trigger happy than some random stranger might show up.  It's not that I can't imagine someone being murdered by some person with a gun.  The year iMonk died was also the year someone I met from my college years was murdered by a stalker who had been stalking her for years.

All the same, I am always more afraid I'm going to get maimed or killed by some inattentive driver than I am afraid that I might be killed by someone with a gun.

A self-driving vehicle for civilian use doesn't appeal to me.  At least with the fire and forget weapon the expected probable death of the thing on the receiving end is intended.  It may be me being old fashioned and close-minded about the limited applicability of self-driving vehicles but I think civilian society would be better off leaving this set of technical advances made within weapons tech firmly on the side of weapons tech.  If there comes a day when I should, God forbid, get killed by a vehicle, I at least want to be able to have a second's moment of being able to see whoever it is that hits me and not see some harbinger of a Stunticon attack.

Or maybe just put the Decepticon logo on every self-driving car and people will know to look for it.

Justin Dean, in interview with Jon Morrison from January 2018, revisits the sale of The City and discusses Mark Driscoll's marketing degree while talking about PR Matters

As readers will know from earlier this week, we've looked briefly at Justin Dean's book PR Matters, with some lengthy preliminary review of the public relations and media highlights (or lowlights) of Mars Hill slightly before and during Justin Dean's tenure as public relations/communications lead for what used to be Mars Hill Church.

Dean has been on the Christian podcast circuit over the last year or so discussing his book and his experience s from the Mars Hill period.  A recent interview was conducted by Jon Morrison with Justin Dean in which Dean talked about his recent book and shared some memories of things from the Mars Hill days.  A couple of things jumped out.  The first was Dean was asked by Morrison about The City, which Morrison, in the framing of his mention, seems to have believed Justin Dean was somehow involved with the development of The City.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5TIjThiNUA&feature=youtu.be

05:00ish
Jon Morrison: and I know many churches are using The City, which, you desi--you were part of the design of that, too, right?

05:13
Justin Dean:
Yeah, I, I wasn't personally but we had a team of developers there. That started as our church management program there and we sold it to Zondervan for about four million bucks. But I think the first year I was there that happened and, uh, we continued to develop it for our own use as well, too, but yeah, stuff like that.

If Justin Dean remembered The City being sold the first year he was on staff at Mars Hill Church then 2011 can't have been the year that Mars Hill Church sold The City to Zondervan because by Zondervan's account that happened in November 2008.

http://www.christiannewswire.com/news/449118717.html

Furthermore, that was verified in 2008 in a message posted by then Pastor Jamie Munson

07:53
So, a couple things I want to hit. You guys are all familiar with The City. Anyone not familiar with The City? That’s our custom, social, online network that Pastor Zack Hubert developed. This is real exciting. We were able to build this in-house. It’s a custom network for Mars Hill. It allows us to communicate. To interact as a community. To reinforce the community that is Mars Hill Church – the daily life of the church. [emphasis added]

We set out to build this, ‘cause some of our old systems were just not working for us. And never set out to sell the thing, but in God’s grace, a couple months ago, as we’ve been using this, a bunch of people have taken interest. Zondervan, a big company, a big Christian media company, came to us and said, “Hey, we’d like to buy that.”

So, we started working with them, negotiating with them, figuring out, “Okay, what would this look like? How do we make this work?” Tons of details. We wanted to make sure that the church is protected in it. That it’s not something where we’re selling our data, or anything like that, but that they want to take the tool and leverage it for other churches to go use.

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in terms of a church developing a piece of technology that a for-profit company is then coming in and purchasing.

We get to continue to use it free as a church. It’ll continue to be private. Our data is not being sold, nothing like that. We’re not gonna have banner ads.

It’ll exist how it is, plus they’re putting a lot more staff into it than we were able to. We had Zack and another part-time – or a couple employees that were working very part-time on The City.
They’re gonna build a staff in Seattle of about 15 people that Zack’ll go and oversee and work with. And they’ll make the tool even better. So, we get to use it. In that, we’ve been given $4 million to steward. It’s a gift that’s come to Mars Hill Church, and we want to share with you what we’re going to do with those funds.

So, we’ll walk through this quickly. The escrow and potential taxes – 1.6 million. There’s a chance the proceeds will be taxed. Our accountant doesn’t think so, but we want to be sure. We want to be safe. We want to put some money in the bank that can just earn interest, that can protect us. In case it is, we’ll have that money set aside.

So, we’ll know that in the next few months. But for – in the meantime, we’re just gonna safeguard and put that in the bank. In addition, we’re gonna bolster up our cash reserves. We always have a cash reserve to float us in times of lean giving. To float us in times of seasonal giving, when the summer’s down or the winter’s up. It allows us just to continue to operate.

...
12:39

We’re not gonna just make up all of our budget deficit with it, because this is an extra thing, and we believe the church should continue to carry the base budget of our operating needs. But this is an extra bonus that we then get to spend and spend wisely for the Gospel.

Next piece – what is our economic plan for 2009? We want to finish 2008 as close to being on budget as possible. We had a $200,000.00 deficit going into December. We’d like to make that up if possible. Given the weather, given the economy, we’re not sure that we will, but we’d like to. That’s what we’re praying for.
...

Now if Justin Dean meant to say that Mars Hill Church sold The City to Zondervan the first year Justin Dean was attending, well, okay then.  But if Justin Dean remembered that The City was sold by Mars Hill to Zondervan the first year Justin Dean was on staff at Mars Hill Church in 2011 then that's something that can be disproven by the testimonies of Zondervan, Mark Driscoll, and Jamie Munson.

Let's get to the other thing Justin Dean mentioned in his interview with Jon Morrison.

08.20
... Pastor Mark is an incredible, you know, has a marketing degree and all, all of the branding and everything came from his vision for just excellency in everything we do to put the Gospel out, and the concentration on good theology and doctrine was just very clear in everything we did. That was, that was our only focus, our only mission--to get out good doctrine and good theology in everything we do.

08:46
You know, it's uh, that's, that's what it was about.

Certainly people did make it about Pastor Mark at the end there, so much so that he felt that he, he felt he needed to quit which is, you know, sad for a lot of reasons but it's good to see what God is doing through him now down there in Phoenix as well. ...

A couple of things ...

First of all, in the twenty years Mark Driscoll has been doing the preaching and teaching thing I can't recall even a single instance in which I ever heard him say that he had a marketing degree.

https://markdriscoll.org/about/
...
Born in North Dakota, Mark Driscoll grew up the son of a union dry-waller in south Seattle. After graduating from high school, he attended Washington State University on scholarship. He became a Christian during his freshman year and graduated from WSU with a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication. He later completed a Master’s degree in Exegetical Theology from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon.
...

He doesn't even say he earned a marketing degree at his website biography now.

That he got a degree in Speech Communication is something he's been pretty consistent about over the years, even in the midst of controversy such as the one he was involved in with an interview with Justin Brierley.

A Blog Post for the Brits

by: Pastor Mark Driscoll on Jan 12, 2012 in Current Events

There is reportedly an article coming out in a British Christian publication that features an interview with me. As is often the case, to stoke the fires of controversy, thereby increasing readership, which generates advertising revenue, a few quotes of mine have been taken completely out of context and sent into the Twittersphere. So, I thought I would put a bit of water on the fire by providing context.

...
I have a degree in communications from one of the top programs in the United States. So does my wife, Grace. We are used to reporters with agendas and selective editing of long interviews. Running into reporters with agendas and being selectively edited so that you are presented as someone that is perhaps not entirely accurate is the risk one takes when trying to get their message out through the media.
...
If Mark Driscoll had wanted to say he had a degree in marketing he's had twenty years in which to say so.  He hasn't.  Why does this matter?

Because, quite simply, as Justin Dean has done his podcast circuit interviews promoting his book PR Matters or talking about what he's done in the post-Mars Hill world we live in, he's talked about how the press and bloggers would sometimes not even contact the church to verify the Mars Hill side of the story before running something. Granting that there were, in fact, plenty of hostile reporters and bloggers out there, if Justin Dean could say on camera that Mark Driscoll had a marketing degree and had a vision that guided all the media content at Mars Hill when Mark Driscoll has never once said "I have a marketing degree", is it altogether startling if some journalists and bloggers conclude that talking to Justin Dean to confirm the facts at hand might not always be necessary?

I was one of the people recruited to beta-test an early version of The City so I certainly wouldn't need to consult Justin Dean about what year The City was sold or who did a ton of work on developing the platform.

And then there's this other element in Dean's comments to Morrison, the claim that near the end of Mars Hill some people had made it about Pastor Mark, so much so that he ... Mark Driscoll ... felt he needed to quit.

We've compiled half a dozen accounts of how and why Mark Driscoll resigned from Mars Hill Church that were disclosed from the day of Mark Driscoll's resignation through the interim period before the launch of The Trinity Church.

https://wenatcheethehatchet.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-diachronic-survey-of-driscoll.html

But in not a single one of those accounts, whether by Mark Driscoll or Robert Morris or anyone affiliated with the Mars Hill Board of Advisors and Accountability did anyone say that the reason Mark Driscoll resigned was because he had come to believe Mars Hill Church had become too much about him.  As any of us who have kept track of what happened to Mars Hill in the wake of Mark Driscoll's resignation, that corporate entity was dissolved in late 2014 and was dissolving throughout 2015.  Now if Mark Driscoll did, in fact, resign from Mars Hill because he felt it had become too much about him, what's the explanation for planting a church that, as he told it to Sheila Walsh, was started by the Driscoll kids?

https://wenatcheethehatchet.blogspot.com/2017/04/on-walshrobison-interview-with-mark_84.html

How is having a website called markdriscoll.org making anything about Mark Driscoll's ministries less about Mark Driscoll as an individual?  Pastor Mark TV was, after all, called Pastor Mark TV.  How is Mark Driscoll Ministries making things less about the one man?

Mark Driscoll is the President and CEO of Mark Driscoll Ministries whether he tells Sheila Walsh his kids decided they were a church or not.

So the idea that Justin Dean presented to Jon Morrison that Mark Driscoll quit Mars Hill Church because Mark Driscoll felt it had gotten to be too much about him at the end seems a bit hard to believe.  But then as we looked a while back ...

Now whether or not Mark Driscoll is okay with naming his own ministry after himself is something he can choose to do, even if it seems to fly in the face of warnings he gave years ago from the Mars Hill days.

...

Some of you have teams that you consider yourself to be on, theologically or philosophically insofar as how church should be done. And what happens is that certain Christians get elevated like rock stars, and it’s not good. It’s not good at all. I know one church the pastor’s name is the domain for the church website. That’s not good. Like if it was www.PastorMarkRocksMyWorld.com and that was our website, you’d go, “You know that’s a little much.” That’s a little much, because if he gets hit by a car do we gotta get a new name? That seems that the church should be more than a focus on one person. That’s why to be honest with this church I try not to show up and speak at every event.

But even if someone were to decide that it's okay for Mark Driscoll to name Mark Driscoll Ministries after himself and to be the President and CEO thereof, how does any of that back up Justin Dean's claim that:

Certainly people did make it about Pastor Mark at the end there, so much so that he felt that he, he felt he needed to quit which is, you know, sad for a lot of reasons but it's good to see what God is doing through him now down there in Phoenix as well. ...

When Dean makes claims for which there doesn't seem to be any positive supporting evidence and against which, there could seem to be formidable evidences to dispute his claims, it is difficult to take seriously his complaint that members of the institutional press and bloggers weren't contacting Mars Hill in the peak years of controversy to confirm things.  Perhaps during those active years things were different, but here in 2018 Justin Dean shared two relatively brief anecdotes for which the factual accuracy and clarity of the claims seem doubtful.

A first prelude to a review of Justin Dean's book PR Matters, a non-comprehensive list of PR incidents and scandals in the history of Mars Hill from mid-2011 to the resignation of Mark Driscoll (updated for formatting's sake)

UPDATE 3-20-2018 6:14PM got some feedback from readers that the first published form of this particular post looked weird in webkit terms, though it looked normal in IE or Firefox, so I've basically reformatted and republished the entirety of the first prelude from scratch in an attempt to make it easier for people to read who may have run into weirdness trying to read it in, say, Chrome, earlier today.  Thanks to readers Bill and Eric Love for calling attention to the formatting issues of the earlier version of the post.  Here's hoping I've fixed things.

Back to the original body of the post, originally published Sunday March 18, 2018 at 8:35pm

As with just about anything at this blog this is not for the quick or inattentive reader.  This is the first of two preludes to actually discussing Justin Dean's book.  This is, like many a blog post before it, one where you'll want to collapse all the menus for the Blog Archive on the right to better read all the linkage that will be presented.

In order to get some idea of what Dean had to deal with as the public relations lead for Mars Hill, it seems best to provide a non-comprehensive but still fairly detailed overview of just how many PR incidents or issues came up from the middle 2011 up through the period when Justin Dean joined Mars Hill staff in later 2011, all the way through to Mark Driscoll's resignation.

What may impress someone who was outside the Mars Hill scene is how easily we could say that Mars Hill seemed to have some scandal or PR issue on close to a monthly basis.  Even things that might not seem like issues of public reputation could be public reputation issues.  For instance, links to statements documented here at Wenatchee The Hatchet can refer to content from The City that was published here that people outside Mars Hill weren't even supposed to be able to see, so  how was Wenatchee The Hatchet so regularly able to get content published on The City that outsiders weren't supposed to have access to to begin with?

There's a gap between July 2013 and September 2013 but it's not because there was nothing going on.  I was receiving leaks of content from The City and keeping tabs on the by then volatile turnover in Mars Hill elder and deacon rosters and publishing the information that seemed salient.  Some of the departures were mentioned on The City but were not supposed to be available for public consideration.

Rather than list all of those links it may suffice to say that concern about just how much was being published at Wenatchee The Hatchet from The City contents and other material, Wenatchee The Hatchet was sent a certified letter from a person at Mars Hill December 5, 2013.  The question of how Wenatchee The Hatchet got ahold of so much content from The City that no one outside Mars Hill was supposed to be able to see had become a point of concern for leaders at MH that was relayed to Wenatchee The Hatchet in 2013.

https://wenatcheethehatchet.blogspot.com/2014/10/publicly-dismiss-bloggers-in-general.html

But let's set that aside for now, because a more detailed answer to that question will, ironically, be easier to address in a review of Justin Dean's book.  This first prelude lays the groundwork for just how much controversy a MH PR person was dealing with in the final years of Mars Hill.  See if you can detect any patterns.  Comments, by the way, are still ever moderated.

The reason we have to review so much old news and old material is because during the peak of controversies in the early 2014 period Mark Driscoll wrote a letter in which he claimed that the smallest location of Mars Hill Church was bigger than his total vision was for the whole of the church when it was started.

IN 2014 MARK DRISCOLL CLAIMED MARS HILL WAS "NOT EVEN CLOSE" TO WHAT HE INITIALLY ENVISIONED DESPITE MARS HILL BEING ON THE CUSP OF HIS EARLY VISION

On (or maybe before?) March 14, 2014 one Mark Driscoll posted a letter on The City to Mars Hill Church, which Warren Throckmorton has linked to via two different avenues.

For those of you who have been around for a while, it is amazing for us to see all that Jesus has done. People often ask if our church today resembles what I had originally planned. Not even close. The smallest location of a Mars Hill Church is bigger than what my total vision was for the whole church when we started.

In the second paragraph of that letter posted to The City (which has been widely and erroneously interpreted as and presented as a public apology of any kind for anything), Mark Driscoll stated that people had often asked if Mars Hill today resembles what Mark Driscoll had originally planned.  There's a problem with "Not even close."  The problem is that in both Confessions of a Reformission Rev from 2006 and the fundraising film God's Work, Our Witness from 2011 Mark Driscoll explicitly said he had dreams of starting a school and a music label from the earliest stages of planting Mars Hill.  You might have to hunt a bit to find the pertinent clip.  A chapter or heading "Launching Mars Hill Church" may be of help.

God's Work, Our Witness Part 1
Pastor Mark Driscoll

You know, and I thought, for sure, we’d probably tap out at two hundred. I thought if we can get this
thing to two hundred, that would be amazing.

And I had big vision for more. I put together a forty-page vision statement. I said, “We’re going to
start a school. We’re going to plant churches. We’re going to do a record label.” I had this whole vision, and I handed it out to, like, fifteen people, and they’re like, “Are you kidding me?”

So I had big dreams. But to be honest with you, man, if we could just get up to two hundred, I thought that would be amazing.

  About 200?

From "Seasons of Grace" by Mark Driscoll

In the fourth season, we launched the church in October 1996 at 6pm with an attendance around 200, which included many friends and supporters. The attendance leveled off shortly thereafter, somewhere around 100 adults, and we continued meeting until the Christmas season.

So at the launch of Mars Hill Church, according to Mark Driscoll's "Seasons of Grace" they had already launched at the number that Driscoll was saying in the 2011 film would be "amazing".

With that in mind, let's revisit the 2006 book

from pages 53-54

So in an effort to clarify our mission, I wrote down on paper the first of what would eventually be many strategic plans. I shot for the moon rather foolishly and decided that our church that was not big enough to fill a bus would plant multiple churches, run a concert venue, start a Bible institute, write books, host conferences, and change the city for Jesus. I started handing out these goals printed on boring white paper without any graphics, colors, or cool fonts, naively assuming that it would all happen eventually just because it was what Jesus wanted.

To get leaders in place for world domination, I also spent time trying to articulate the vision in my head to good men who would be qualified to rise up as fellow elders-pastors. So, as Jesus did, I spent time in prayer asking the Father which of his sons should be trained for leadership. The church started as an idea I shared with Lief Moi and Mike Gunn. Lief is a descendant of Genghis Khan and his dad was a murderer, and Mike is a former football player. They proved to be invaluable, except for the occasional moments when they would stand toe-to-toe in a leadership meeting, threatening to beat the Holy Spirit out of each other. Both men were older than I and had years of ministry experience, and they were good fathers, loving husbands, and tough. ...

So now this year Driscoll has said, "The smallest location of a Mars Hill Church is bigger than what my total vision was for the whole church when we started."  For Driscoll to have made that statement in March 2014 is to say something that flies in the face of things he's said on record in print and in film over a period ranging from 2006-2011.  There was a vision of starting a music label since either the launch of Mars Hill Church or to go by the numbers and the timeline laid out in Confessions of a Reformission Rev to a period even before the official launch of Mars Hill Church.

"Not even close" is hard to sustain based on Mark Driscoll's own testimony.  If anything it is only right now that Mars Hill Music has been in partnership with Tooth & Nail (after Re:Sound failed and after Mars Hill Music was announced) and on the eve of Mars Hill Schools launching (after the disappearance of the 2005 Capstone Institute and the dormancy of the Resurgence Training Center) that Mars Hill is on the cusp of things Mark Driscoll envisioned since the dawn of Mars Hill Church.

BY 2014 CONTROVERSY ABOUT HIS BOOKS HIGHLIGHTED THAT MARK DRISCOLL HAD CREATED THE KIND OF SIDE COMPANY FOR THE OWNERSHIP OF BOOK RIGHTS THAT HE HAD CONDEMNED FROM THE PULPIT IN 2009 AS A SIGN OF SELFISH GAIN

https://wenatcheethehatchet.blogspot.com/2014/02/mark-driscoll-in-2009-i-didnt-start.html

Something else we've looked at in the past is how in 2009 Mark Driscoll said that he had not started a side company to manage book royalties because of the selfish greed that was involved in that, although in 2011 he would set up precisely such a side company, On Mission, LLC, to manage book royalties for a book he would later publish in 2012, Real Marriage.

But it's worth quoting the 2009 sermon, which has no transcript (an unusual feature for a Mark Driscoll sermon, whose sermons were ordinarily transcribed pretty thoroughly):

Prophets, Priests and Kings
  Trial: 8 witnesses from 1 & 2 Peter
 May 3, 2009
 1 Peter 5:1-5

40:36
... In all of this, as well, I've had people ask, "So what about the book sales?"  Here's how it works, I didn't start a separate company. One of the ways that guys work this, they become a leader in a church and they have a company on the side and they use the church to funnel business into their side company and I didn't start a side company (like a lot of guys do) for my book writing. Instead I publish under Mars Hill.

So the way it works, I don't get all the money. Mars Hill gets a huge take. Mars Hill gets all the marketing dollars, they get paid by the publishers. Mars Hill gets half of all the royalties so the books that I publish, about 75% of the revenue goes to Mars Hill Church, not me. Not me.  Because I'm worried about this issue, greed, shameful gain. Just using Mars Hill as a platform so I can start a business to rake in massive dollars. I don't think it's a sin for a pastor to get a salary but we're
now at the point where the books and the marketing, that a huge portion of my salary is covered by income that I generate.  And, I'll be honest with you, I hope one of my books pops or I get enough books on the shelf, titles in print , I'd love to see the day where I'm basically working for free and that the book sales and royalties and such let me generate enough money for Mars Hill that I can work free of charge. That's my hope and my goal. I don't know if we'll get there but that's what I'm trying to do. [emphasis added]

Driscoll had made it clear in 2009 that he hoped one of his books would "pop", or that he'd have enough books in print, that he would be able to work for free and not draw a salary from Mars Hill.  The Result Source contract did ensure that at least one of Mark Driscoll's books would "pop", if by "pop" this were understood to be making a #1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list.

But along the way Mark Driscoll had started precisely the side company for managing book royalties that he regarded as a sign of selfish greed for gain ... in other pastors, which should continually raise questions as to what it was between 2009 and 2011 that made Mark Driscoll have a change of heart about owning a side company to manage book royalties.  That's not something we have an answer for, but it's something to bear in mind because it would seem much of the decision-making to use Result Source on the one hand and to have the side company on the other were made well before Justin Dean took the reins of public relations at Mars Hill.

In other words, we can have some understanding in light of the scandals that erupted on a nearly monthly basis at Mars Hill or about Mars Hill from mid-2011 through to the end of Mars Hill that there was arguably only so much a public relations person could have done to salvage the reputation of the institution and the brand.  The gap between Driscoll's claim in 2014, that what Mars Hill was was "not even close" to what he envisioned, and what he'd repeatedly said had been his dream for what Mars Hill would become on the record in mass media, was too big to bridge with a few simple open letters to members.  The gap between a public condemnation of side companies for managing book royalties for books by a pastor as being a sign of selfish gain that Driscoll preached in 2009 and the company Mark Driscoll set up in the run up to the publication of Real Marriage was also a rather big gap to bridge, even if Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill had never at any point followed the advice of counsel to make use of Result Source.

Driscoll had made it clear from the earliest days of Mars Hill he wanted to start a record label and that publishing books was part of his long-term vision, along with founding a Bible school.  So when he wrote that all of that sort of thing that Mars Hill was striving to achieve in 2014 was "not even close" to what he originally envisioned, his own decades of preaching and writing testified against him.  Not even the greatest public relations person in the world was likely able to help Mark Driscoll out of what was arguably a self-generated public relations fiasco.

Personally it's hard to believe that all of the controversies were simply ones that erupted that Mars Hill somehow couldn't handle.  Mark Driscoll was adept at provoking controversy and it's hard to take seriously that at any point Rachel Held Evans' public statements against Mark Driscoll as being a bully weren't aligned in some way with her own book publishing and book promotional schedules.  After all, Thomas Nelson published Evans' book and Mark Driscoll's book within the same calendar year.  A person might at least entertain the possibility that if Driscoll and Evans were that opposed to each other they wouldn't even wish to share the same publisher, would they?

Something to bear in mind about internet firestorms between ostensibly opposite sides of an issue who share a publisher in common.

FINALLY, BY 2014 MARK DRISCOLL WAS CLAIMING THE REASON THERE WAS NO CHILDRENS' MINISTRY AT THE START OF MARS HILL WAS THERE WERE NO KIDS, DESPITE HIS OWN TESTIMONY THAT HE RECRUITED CO-FOUNDERS MIKE GUNN AND LIEF MOI, IN PART, BECAUSE HE CONSIDERED THEM GOOD FATHERS.

MALACHI: LIVING FOR A LEGACY
WHERE IS MY HONOR?

Here’s where we’re at: Recently, 10,177 adults in attendance across Mars Hill. Fifteen churches, five states. We count people because people count. We count people because people count, and it’s not just numbers, it’s faces and names. There are also almost 2,500 kids, right? Can we say, “Praise God”? We like kids. When we started Mars Hill 17 years ago, there wasn’t even a children’s ministry—because there were no children. [emphasis added] People are coming in, getting saved, getting baptized, getting married, getting pregnant. Ideally, that’s the order, OK?

Remember that the FY2013 annual report listed the average attendance as 12,329Sutton Turner's July 2013 update mentioned the following:
* Average weekly attendance: 11,151 (8,959 adults and 2,191 kids)  [emphasis added]
  • Contributing households: 3,394 (an estimated 32% of adults at Mars Hill Church gave during July)
  • Average giving per adult: $38.33 (higher than projected)
  • Total giving: $1.61M (target: $1.48M)

  • So if there were 10,177 adults and almost 2,500 kids that would get you in the zone of the 12,329 average, wouldn't it?  It's worth noting that Turner's July 2013 update bracketed out the slightly less than 9,000 adults and the slightly less than 2,200 children.  This raises a question of whether or not it would be prudent to take whatever the average attendance is stated to be and simply subtracting one fifth of that amount to account for the children.

Speaking of children, that bit about how when Mars Hill started 17 years ago there were no children, might be hyperbolic?

... [emphasis added]...

What's that again about no kids?  If Driscoll from 2006 testifies that Gunn and Moi were good fathers how can a person take seriously the claim of Driscoll in 2013 that there were no kids in the beginning of Mars Hill?  Again, perhaps Driscoll's 2013 statement is just some rhetorical, hyperbolic flourish.  Or let's propose that none of the Gunn and Moi children were so young that they couldn't participate in the earliest services at Mars Hill.  How about that?  But to say there were no children at Mars Hill Church in the plainest, most literal form, is one of the most readily disprovable assertions about the history of Mars Hill in the history of Mars Hill by Mark Driscoll's own published account.

    POSTSCRIPT: 01-18-2014

    and ... from page 145

Jamie [Munson] came to Seattle at the age of nineteen, drinking, smoking pot, and having spent most of his life driving around in a maturity cul de sac, listening to Bon Jovi albums in the great nation of Montana. In Seattle, he lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Jen and Phil, who had been with the church from the beginning. They were the first couple who showed up with kids when we were in our core phase. [emphasis added]

    On just these three points:

    1) how ambitious was Mark Driscoll's initial vision for the expected achievements of Mars Hill?
    2) if setting up side companies to own book royalties indicated a pastor with a selfish greed for gain had Mark Driscoll quietly done an about face on his publicly preached principle?
    3) had Mark's understanding of the history of MH as a church co-founded with two men who were fathers he admired slipped his mind when he claimed the early MH had no children?

It seemed as though Mark Driscoll's memory was insufficiently reliable to be taken at face value or, worse, he could not be trusted to give a factually accurate account of widely and well-established facts about the history of Mars Hill Church regardless of any potential motive.

Now with the two preludes wrapped up, we can get to discussing the book Justin Dean wrote and published.
